No, corn tortillas do not contain wheat, rye, barley or oat ingredients.

No, El Mercado Plant have strict food safety programs in place, including a very comprehensive Allergen Control Program.

Food Allergens - Do El Mercado corn products contain gluten?

No, our corn products do not contain gluten. corn products are produced with 100% corn flour. These products include corn tortillas, tortilla chips and tostadas.

Ingredients used - Why does El Mercado products use preservatives?

Preservatives help protect the flavor and the freshness of our products. We use only the minimum amount of preservatives necessary to provide the product its shelf life.

Shelf life - How long can tortillas be kept at ambient temperature after I buy them?

The tortillas can be left at ambient temperature and should be good until the date printed on the package.

Shelf life - I bought a package of tortillas and they were in the refrigerated section at the store. Should I refrigerate them at home?

Yes. If the product was in the refrigerated section at the store, they have a refrigerated code date printed on the package. If the product is not kept in the refrigerator after purchase, it may grow mold before its expiration date, depending on humidity and other ambient factors.

Shelf life - How long can we keep the tortillas after opening the package?

It depends on the handling conditions the product was exposed to. If you are not going to consume the whole package after opening it, wash your hands, remove the tortillas you will need and tightly close the package. The product should be good until the expiration date printed on the package.

They may grow mold and may become dry

Shelf life - Is it OK to freeze corn tortillas?

Yes, it is OK to freeze corn tortillas. It is very important that you let them thaw in the refrigerator for a day or two before using them. Corn tortillas should not be thawed in the microwave

How do I heat up a tortilla?

Preheat skillet to medium heat. Cook each side of the tortilla for approx. 30 seconds. Flip a third time and cook for aprrox. 30 sec until puffed. Serve warm and enjoy.
